Maine's homeschool evaluation: who can sign, what they review, and September 1
Maine lists an outside evaluation of a homeschooled student's year as one of the options its law allows each year. The signer is one of: an identified individual who holds a current Maine teacher's certificate; a local homeschooling support group whose membership for this purpose includes a currently certified Maine teacher or administrator, reviewing a presented portfolio; or a local advisory board selected by the superintendent that includes one school employee and two home instruction tutors. The evaluator looks at the student's progress for the year and produces a review and acceptance of the student's progress.

The evaluator looks at the student's progress for the year. What comes out of that review is a review and acceptance of the student's progress (the review and acceptance).
When it is due
The the review and acceptance goes to the school officials and the commissioner, with the annual continuation letter by September 1.
Other ways to meet this requirement
Maine's law also lists these ways to meet the yearly requirement, apart from an outside evaluation:
- a standardized achievement test administered through the school unit or by arrangement approved by the commissioner
- a test developed by the school unit's officials for the home instruction program
For families
The portfolio, the log, and the samples an evaluator asks to see are easiest to produce when they were kept as the year happened, not assembled the week before September 1. A photo of a finished project, a logged book, a math sample each month: each one is a thirty-second entry, and by the time the evaluator asks, the record already exists.
The record is free for families, forever: capture, the expense log, the portfolio, the verifiable transcript, verification, export. Generating filled-in artifacts, like an annual 529 expense file or an ESA quarterly report, is the one optional paid family service, part of Family Pro at $119 per year, and every document previews filled-in, free, first.
