The evaluator moment, state by state.
Once a year, in twelve states, the law lets or makes a certified teacher, a licensed psychologist, or another named adult look at what a homeschooled student actually did and sign a document for the office the statute names. That one page is where the signature product and the paperwork product are the same object. Pick a state below to read its rule.
The twelve states
| State | Document | When it is due |
|---|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | the evaluator's certification | The the evaluator's certification goes to the district superintendent by June 30. |
| Florida | the teacher's evaluation | The the teacher's evaluation is filed with the district school superintendent's office in the county where the student lives once a year, a year from the family's own start date, with no fixed statewide day. |
| Virginia | the evaluation letter | The the evaluation letter goes to the division superintendent by August 1. |
| New York | the written narrative | The the written narrative is filed with the school district, with the fourth quarterly report. |
| West Virginia | the teacher's written narrative | The the teacher's written narrative goes to the county superintendent, in grades 3, 5, 8, and 11 by June 30. |
| Washington | the written assessment | The the written assessment is written once a year and kept in the student's own permanent record (nothing is filed unless the student enters a public school). |
| Colorado | the qualified person's evaluation | The the qualified person's evaluation is written once a year and kept in the school district that received the family's notice, or an independent or parochial school in Colorado. |
| Maine | the review and acceptance | The the review and acceptance goes to the school officials and the commissioner, with the annual continuation letter by September 1. |
| Vermont | the teacher's review | The the teacher's review is written once a year and kept in the family's own records (the statute asks parents to maintain the record of each assessment). |
| Hawaii | the teacher's written evaluation | The the teacher's written evaluation is written once a year and kept in the Department of Education, in the yearly progress report. |
| Iowa | the evaluator's report | The the evaluator's report goes to the parent, the school district of residence, and the Department of Education by August 1. |
| Louisiana | the teacher statement | The the teacher statement goes to the Louisiana Department of Education, with the renewal application. |
Every row above was checked against the primary statute or agency text on 2026-10-12. 3 states once required or allowed an outside evaluation and no longer do, so none of them is listed above: New Hampshire (RSA 193-A:6 (the annual educational evaluation) was repealed effective July 1 2026.); Ohio (The annual assessment requirement was removed in 2023; not re-verified on the listed date.); Arkansas (The annual testing requirement was removed in 2015; not re-verified on the listed date.).
