Sample New York IHIP — elementary (K–6) (2026–2027)
New York families file an IHIP with their district by August 15 — or within 14 days of beginning home instruction (8 NYCRR §100.10). Below is a completed example, not a blank form: grades 1–6 share one required subject list under 8 NYCRR §100.10(e)(1) — twelve subjects from arithmetic through physical education — with a 900-hour annual equivalent. Kindergarten filers use a shorter list. The student is fictional; the wording is real, and you are welcome to borrow it.

Why the wording is general on purpose
Describe each subject in general terms ("regular composition assignments") rather than specific promises ("one polished essay per month"). General language satisfies the requirement and keeps you flexible if your plans change mid-year.
Every plan below follows that rule. Copy any of them into your own IHIP and adjust the details to your family.
Arithmetic
Sequential arithmetic instruction using our chosen curriculum, with regular practice and periodic review.
Reading
Regular reading instruction and independent reading from a mix of curriculum materials and library books.
Spelling
Regular spelling study integrated with our reading and writing work.
Writing
Regular composition assignments across subjects, with attention to handwriting and mechanics.

Regular music appreciation, singing, and/or instrument practice.
Visual arts
Regular art projects and study of artists and techniques.
Physical education
Regular physical activity including outdoor play, sports, and family fitness activities.
